ReFLEX originated as a demonstrator project to build an ‘integrated energy system’ (IES) to coordinate and combine multiple energy assets across electricity, transport and heat. The £28.5 million ReFLEX Orkney demonstrator project was 50% funded by UKRI through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and 50% funded via private investment. ReFLEX Orkney Ltd was set up by the ReFLEX project to carry on its aims after the project had finished; ReFLEX Orkney Ltd was incorporated in late November 2019, an has been providing decarbonisation support to Orcadian residents and businesses ever since.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) brings together the UK Research Councils, Innovate UK and Research England into a single organisation to create the best environment for research and innovation to flourish.
